Improving Outcomes by Transforming Hospital Care
Hospitals can be confusing and frightening for individuals living with dementia. Unfamiliar environments, fast-paced routines, and sensory overload often lead to increased anxiety, agitation, and risk of adverse outcomes. At Dementia Insights, we are proud to offer the Hospital Virtual Dementia Tour® (HVDT)—a specialized version of the evidence-based Virtual Dementia Tour® created by Second Wind Dreams®.
The HVDT is designed specifically for hospital teams, helping staff experience firsthand what it feels like to navigate a clinical setting with dementia. This powerful insight leads to meaningful changes in care delivery, from the bedside to discharge planning.
Participants are guided through realistic hospital scenarios while wearing patented sensory-altering equipment that mimics the physical and cognitive challenges of dementia. The immersive experience is followed by a reflective debrief, offering practical strategies that can be immediately applied to improve patient care.
Key outcomes include:
Improved communication and trust with patients and families
Reduced risk of falls, agitation, and unnecessary interventions like psychotropic medications
Enhanced staff confidence and empathy across all departments
Greater interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered care
The HVDT is ideal for any hospital staff who interact with patients, including:
Nurses and nursing assistants
Physicians and residents
Therapists (PT, OT, Speech)
Environmental services and dietary staff
Patient transport, emergency, and security personnel
Administrative and support team members
Everyone plays a role in creating a dementia-friendly hospital experience.
Led by Linley Glover, with over 19 years of nursing experience and a lifelong dedication to elder care, Dementia Insights brings a personal and professional commitment to dementia education. In partnership with Second Wind Dreams®, we deliver the HVDT with authenticity, compassion, and clinical insight.
At Dementia Insights, we believe that understanding changes everything—and through the HVDT, we help hospital teams create safer, more compassionate environments for individuals living with dementia.
